Pallidus raises ~R1.4 billion in funding for Akademia Campus

Pallidus Raises R1.4 Billion in Debt Financing for the New Akademia Campus in Pretoria-East.

We are proud to have acted as the exclusive transaction advisor to Kanton Beleggings in securing approximately R1.4 billion in debt funding from a large Pan African bank for the development of Phase 1 of the new Akademia campus in the east of Pretoria.

The transaction represents one of the most significant private investments in tertiary education infrastructure in South Africa in recent years, an important milestone in expanding the country’s higher education capacity and in supporting the continued development of Afrikaans as a language of academic instruction.

The new Akademia campus will enable Akademia to significantly expand its tertiary education offering and student capacity, creating a world-class academic environment designed to serve thousands of students. The development will provide state-of-the-art teaching, learning and student facilities that support academic excellence, innovation, research and holistic student development, positioning Akademia to play an increasingly important role in South Africa’s higher education landscape. As South Africa continues to experience increasing demand for quality tertiary education, investments of this nature play a critical role in reducing pressure on government-funded universities.

Pallidus’ South African Impact

Pallidus has been privileged to partner with Kanton Beleggings since 2019 – supporting its long-term vision from early strategic positioning and capital planning, through to the structuring, negotiation and successful execution of this R1.4 billion funding solution.

Commenting on the transaction, Stephan van der Walt, Managing Director at Pallidus Capital notes: “At Pallidus, our purpose is to enable exceptional people and businesses to achieve their ambitions through thoughtful capital solutions and long-term partnerships. The successful funding of the Akademia campus demonstrates the confidence that leading financial institutions continue to place in high-quality projects that deliver both meaningful economic returns and lasting social impact. We are particularly proud to have played a role in helping realise a vision that will expand access to quality tertiary education, strengthen South Africa’s educational infrastructure and contribute to preserving Afrikaans as a language of academic instruction. This investment reflects our belief that capital, when deployed with purpose, can create opportunities and build institutions that serve communities, families and future generations.”

Phase 1 of the Akademia Campus spans a 220-hectare site, capacity for 5,000 full-time students and 1,500 students in residence. The first intake of Akademia students on the campus will be in January 2028.

The development reflects the shared commitment of Kanton Beleggings, Akademia and a Pan African bank to invest in South Africa’s future through education. Once completed, the campus will stand as a lasting investment in the country’s human capital, supporting economic growth, skills development and academic excellence for decades to come.
